Esperanto is a politically neutral, constructed language, that was conceived in the late 19th century by Ludwik Zamenhof. His aim was to create a common language that is easy to learn, that can be universally used and creates a bridge between nations to foster harmony between different nationalities. It became popular in the early half of the 20th century and rapidly spread to all continents. Before and during World War II it started facing attacks; European dictators like Hitler, Stalin and Franco considered Esperanto to be a language for anarchists and conspiracists, and made efforts to exterminate it. After the war English slowly but surely took over as an international language. In the last decades the Esperanto Association saw its number of members declining, even though in recent years there is an increase in people learning Esperanto through language apps like Duolingo. Up to this day Esperanto is still spoken by an estimated 2 million people in around 140 countries worldwide. The Universala Esperanto-Asocio (World Esperanto Association) has official relations with the UN and UNESCO. It’s headquarters is located in Rotterdam since the 1960’s.

For Disclosed #14 Ekspedicio Malkaŝita, we are organising a visit to the Universale Esperanto-Asocio headquarters. There we will get introduced to this remarkable language, its history and current usage and we will have a group talk on its sociolinguistic implications, with several experts in the field. The community and network grew around the language, in stead of the other way around. It has developed its own distribution channels, lobby groups, schools, publishers, researchers etc., and is mostly self-organised and self-supportive. What kind of challenges does this organisation face in changing political climates? Esperanto was designed to foster equality, what potential does it carry in current polarised times? It is mainly an international network – can this language also unite on city level? Or should we instead focus on local linguistic common grounds that often transcend nationalities? like ‘Rotterdams’? or both?

The day will be concluded with a communal dinner at restaurant Habibi (free of charge for participants – drinks at your own expense – cash only)

EKSPEDICIO MALKAŜITA is part of the public program DISCLOSED initiated by Het Wilde Weten, which will run throughout the coming two years. Het Wilde Weten consists of sixteen artists that have a studio in the former nunnery at the Robert Fruinstraat. Every six weeks one of the members hosts a public event that derives directly from their artistic practice. This results in lively series of talks, exhibitions, screenings, performances and more, disclosing the energy and pluriformity of the collective and creating public moments to meet and interact.

This program is kindly supported by the Mondriaan Fund.
